Be a barista at home

There’s no better taste than a barista-made coffee. But what about when you can’t be bothered to put proper clothes on, or want to save some money and create your own?

People around the world use MONIN at home to re-create their favourite coffee shop drinks, and with newfound coffee technology, it’s never been easier.

Here we’ll show you different ways to create a coffee at home, whether you like a latte, flat white, cappuccino or an indulgent mocha.

For all of these recipes, you can also enjoy them iced by halving the milk, but we’ll focus on hot recipes here. Read more about iced lattes at home here.

Milk

For all of these recipes, you can use whatever milk you like – whether whole, semi-skimmed, oat, almond, soya or coconut, amongst many others. They will differ in terms of how well they froth, but all will taste great. Whole milk gets the best froth and is best for latte art, and if you’re choosing oat milk, go for the barista variations for the best froth.

How you heat your milk is dependent on what equipment you have at home. If you have a barista machine at home with a steaming wand, that is the best option. Otherwise, you can heat the milk in a saucepan or microwave (being careful not to burn it), and then use a hand whisk to froth it up. Depending on the type of coffee you choose, you will want different amounts of milk and frothiness.

Latte: 1:3 coffee-to-milk ratio with a 1cm foam top.

Flat White: 1:2 coffee-to-milk ratio with a very thin layer of foam.

Cappuccino: 1:1:1 coffee-to-milk-to-foam ratio.

Coffee

Depending on the machine or equipment you have at home, you can create barista style espressos with an at home bean-to-cup, or espresso machine. You can also use tools such as AeroPress or a cafetiere. The standard rule is a single measure of espresso is 30ml (double 60ml), so you want to make sure the quantity is the same. If you’re using instant coffee, mix a heaped teaspoon with 60ml of hot water to create your double espresso. If you like it stronger or weaker, just amend the amount of coffee you use to your taste.

Types of coffee drinks

Lattes are by far the UK’s most popular coffee to have at a coffee shop. They are the milkiest option, with 1 part coffee to 3 parts milk and a foamy top. These are a perfect introductory drink, or great for those who don’t like a strong coffee taste. You can use syrup to make it sweeter or add flavour. The most popular flavours are Caramel, Vanilla and Hazelnut

Syrup

Many coffee drinkers like to sweeten their coffee with syrup to take the bitterness out of the coffee notes and add flavour. From the bestselling flavours, to more interesting options such as Cinnamon Roll, Crème Brulée, Tiramisu or Pistachio syrups. There are also sugar free and no added sugar options available, like the delicisous No Added Suage Salted Caramel.  You can shop MONIN’s full coffee shop range here.

Most coffee shops will use 15-20ml per drink, which is the same as 3-4 teaspoons. You can use however much you like depending on how sweet or flavourful you want your drink to be.

Flavoured latte recipe:

  • 20ml MONIN syrup of choice (4 teaspoons)
  • Double espresso (or 60ml prepared coffee, see ‘coffee’ section above)
  • 240ml milk of choice (steamed, or heated & frothed, with a lot of froth)

Add the syrup and coffee to a mug or heatproof glass and stir to combine, then top with the milk, ending with a frothy layer. Stir before drinking and enjoy hot!

Flavoured flat white recipe:

These are a shorter, stronger coffee drink than a latte, served with less froth.

  • 20ml MONIN syrup of choice (4 teaspoons)
  • Double espresso (or 60ml prepared coffee, see ‘coffee’ section above)
  • 120ml milk of choice (steamed, or heated & slightly frothed)

Add the syrup and coffee to a small mug or heatproof glass and stir to combine. Top with the milk and a small amount of froth.

Flavoured cappuccino recipe:

Cappuccinos are similar to flat whites, but served with equal parts coffee, milk and froth and often topped with a dusting of chocolate powder on top.

  • 20ml MONIN syrup of choice (4 teaspoons)
  • Double espresso (or 60ml prepared coffee, see ‘coffee’ section above)
  • 120ml milk of choice (steamed, or heated & frothed until it has around half milk and half froth)

Add the syrup and coffee to a mug or heatproof glass and stir to combine. Top with the milk and plenty of froth. Top with a dusting of chocolate powder on top.

Flavoured mocha recipe:

Mochas are a hybrid of a latte and hot chocolate and are a great, more indulgent option. For the chocolate mix, you can use your favourite hot chocolate powder, or one scoop of MONIN’s Chocolate frappé powder for a really chocolatey taste.

  • 20ml MONIN syrup
  • 240ml milk of choice (steamed, or heated & slightly frothed)
  • 20g chocolate powder
  • Single espresso (or 30ml prepared coffee, see ‘coffee’ section above)

First, mix the chocolate powder with the milk and heat or stir together until fully combined. To a mug or heatproof glass, add the syrup, chocolate mix and espresso and stir everything together until combined. For an extra treat, top with whipped cream and marshmallows.
